THE STORMERS AND the chiefs played out an entertaining battle at Newlands in Cape Town over the weekend, with the Stormers edging out the tie by 34-26 in the end.
Both sides produced a fine exhibition of scoring, the pick of which was a first-half try from the Chiefs that demonstrated some excellent build-up play.
After collecting the ball from just outside their own try line, the New Zealand side worked through a sequence of eight perfectly weighted passes to bring possession down the field and cut the Stormers’ defence to ribbons in less than 30 seconds.
There was another moment of brilliance in the second half, which led to a Stormers try.
With the scoreline reading 27-21 to the Stormers, Dillyn Leyds found himself in a race for possession in the Chiefs’ half of the pitch.
After collecting the ball, he was tackled to the ground and it looked as though the attack had been killed off, but Leyds improvised to spin an offload from behind his back, which put SP Marais through to get the insurance try that put the contest beyond doubt.
